Documents Needed to Buy a Trailer

When purchasing any kind of trailer from Appalachian Trailers, there are several important forms and documents you’ll need to have ready to ensure a smooth and efficient process. Here’s a detailed rundown of what you’ll need if you are buying anything from enclosed trailers, car trailers, utility trailers, or another trailer design.

Driver’s License

We are always required to verify the purchaser’s ID, but additional IDs might also be necessary. If the payment is made by someone other than the purchaser, we will need to see their ID as well. This applies to checks and credit cards! Additionally, in some cases, we may need a copy of your transporter’s (driver’s) ID too.

Proof of Insurance

You must show proof of valid insurance for the towing vehicle at the time of pickup. This is crucial for ensuring the safety and legality of your new trailer on the road.

Tax Exempt Form

If you plan to file your purchase as tax-exempt, we will need a completed tax exempt form. We can provide the form here, but remember to have all the necessary information required on the document. Specifically:

  • Transportation for Hire: You will need to provide your MC number.
  • Resale: You will need to provide your ND (New Dealer) number.

Other numbers may be required for different exemption reasons. Make sure to check with your sales rep to verify you have the numbers required by the state!

Final Payment

If your trailer is not already paid in full, you will need to bring your final payment. Remember, if you received the cash discount, you will need to bring cash or a certified check, or wire the funds prior to pick-up. Always verify that we have received the wire before driving to our location! If you plan to pay with a credit card, we do NOT accept American Express. We do accept VISA, Mastercard, and Discover. The person whose name is on the credit card must be present to sign and provide ID.

Other Important Forms to Buy a Trailer

Different types of trailers come with their own specific requirements and forms needed for purchase. Understanding the necessary paperwork for specific types of purchases is essential.

Titled Trailers

For tilted trailers, we will need the person whose name the trailer is being titled in present to sign the application for title. This form requires the social security number of the person the trailer is being titled in, or the EIN number if it is being put into a business name.

Gooseneck (GN) Measurement Sheet

For any gooseneck trailer purchases, a gooseneck measurement sheet is essential. It allows us to verify that the trailer will work with your truck. It’s helpful to send this in prior to your arrival so we can ensure compatibility between the trailer and your tow vehicle.

Ball & Receiver

Make sure you know the ball size required for the trailer you are purchasing and have the appropriate size ready. If you are purchasing a gooseneck (GN) trailer, inform your sales rep if you plan to use the ball or king pin.

Torque Wrench

Due to axle company recommendations, you will need to retorque your lug nuts on your way home. This ensures your trailer’s wheels remain securely fastened during transport.

Schedule Your Trailer Pick-Up

We welcome customers at any time, but for the most seamless experience, please schedule your pick-up in Ohio or Pennsylvania in advance. This allows us to get your trailer pulled, prepped, and any upgrades completed before your arrival.

We look forward to seeing you and making your trailer purchase experience as smooth as possible! We hope this guide helps you prepare all the necessary documents and forms for your trailer purchase. If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us. Safe travels and happy hauling!
